Valleywise Health is one step closer to opening its $596 million replacement hospital in Phoenix.
After breaking ground for the 673,000-square-foot, 10-story medical center, general contractor Kitchell raised the final beam in place on the new Valleywise Health Medical Center on March 1.
Slated to open in 2023, the new 10-story structure will replace a 50-year-old structure at North 24th Street and East Roosevelt Street in midtown Phoenix that will be razed and converted to parking space to accommodate more patients and visitors.
Funding comes from a nearly $1 billion bond issue approved by voters in 2014.
The new hospital — the state's only public teaching hospital and safety net hospital — is slated to open in 2023. While Kitchell is taking the lead on construction, Cuningham Group partnered with EYP Architecture + Engineering for the design.
Julie Johnson, a medical space broker and executive vice president for Colliers International in Phoenix, said she was excited to see the topping out milestone for the hospital.

"This beautiful new 10-story state-of-the-art hospital designed by Cuningham Group/EYP and constructed by Kitchell will provide an expanded, efficient facility, including a full floor for the renowned Arizona Burn Center," Johnson said. "Valleywise did an excellent job of caring for our community this past year during the pandemic and shifting some of their hospital areas to provide Covid care and also starting a new telehealth program for outpatient visits. It will be even more exciting in 2023 when the new hospital opens and our community will see the results of Prop 480 that voters passed in 2014."
Prop 480 also is funding the development of new health clinics for Valleywise Health, including one in Laveen, Phoenix and Peoria.
